50km Ultra Marathon Fundraiser
My name is Ryan Shekell. I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at 18 years old and have seen my lung function decline over the past 19 years. However, a new drug was recently approved and has given me new hope for health and longevity. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has been dedicated to making people's lives better with CF. They provide supplemental nutrition for patients struggling to gain weight, funding for research in searching for a cure, and many other freebies for hospitalized patients, among many other contributions. I'm grateful for the foundation and feel it is my responsibility to give back in any way.
Something I always wanted to do, but never felt like it was possible was to run a marathon, but recently had a stronger desire to run an ultra. Although the pandemic has cancelled many races, I am committing to run the CanLakes Ultramarathon on October 10. It's a 50km race from the southern point of Canandaigua Lake to Fingerlakes Community College at the Northern end. I'm optimistic that this race will take place, but if not, I will run the route on that day, regardless of whether it sanctioned or not.
I understand that this is a bad time to fundraise because of economic and pandemic circumstances. But, if you know me, or anyone else battling CF, please consider donating to this cause, so the next generation of kids with cystic fibrosis are afforded the same opportunities that I have been. I will match donations dollar for dollar up to my goal of $1000. However, I hope to raise more if possible.
Thanks for your consideration and support!
