Dear Friend and CF Foundation Supporter,
I would like to thank you for all your past support of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Whether joining the UAlbany Coaches Cure CF effort, attending CF Foundation events or contributing to various fundraisers, you have been an important part of the remarkable progress made in the fight against CF during the past decade.
I have had the pleasure of working with the Northeastern NY chapter of the CF Foundation for a number of years, including serving as a member of the chapter’s Board of Directors since 2016. And I was honored last month when the chapter selected me to become the new Chair of our Board. I am excited and determined to continue to take on cystic fibrosis in this new role – and I know that a cure for CF is within our reach. I humbly ask for your continued support as we push towards the finish line.
The families who established the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in 1955 realized early on that funding medical research would be essential to bringing an end to the disease. Growth in scientific understanding and investment in genetic-based therapies is unprecedented, with approximately 200 gene therapies undergoing clinical trials annually for a variety of diseases. The CF Foundation is engaging prominent pharma and biotech companies to apply these technological breakthroughs in CF. In late 2019, the Foundation challenged potential collaborators to submit proposals that will accelerate the pace of progress in CF drug discovery and development and announced that it intends to allocate half a billion dollars to the effort through 2025.
Nearly every drug available to treat CF was made possible through CF Foundation support, coming from people like you. Due in part to partnership with the CF Foundation, a new drug became available in late 2019 that has truly changed the lives of thousands of people with CF. Trifakta™ was approved as a cutting edge therapy with the potential to help upwards of 90% of people with CF. And I myself can speak to the amazing benefits of those efforts. But more must be done.
If this was a ‘normal’ year, I would be offering thanks to many of you at about this time for again joining in our Coaches Cure CF effort, in partnership with the UAlbany Basketball team. While the pandemic forced us to skip that game in 2021, I hope I can still count on your continued support as the collective CF community makes the final push for a cure. I thank you sincerely for all you have done as part of this cause and I look forward to our continued partnership!
